Middle School North Clubs and Activities
Breakfast Club
Ease into the school day in a positive fashion! Start the day off right with a healthy breakfast and stimulating conversation with friends. Students will be able to play chess, play Scrabble, work on puzzles, read and discuss the newspaper, go to the library, or make the homework connection with friends and peer tutors.

Chess Club
Students challenge other students to a game of chess. The purpose is for students to practice and perfect their game for a tournament. Competition is not stressed but rather enjoyment for the game.

Dance Team, “Studio 73 North”
This dance team works on various types of dance including: hip-hop, dance, etc. This team is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. No tryout is required. A commitment is required. The team meets from September - March. Students may join in September or January only. A small fee is required for uniforms.

Environmental Club
Help the environment and help your school by taking part in the recycling activities. Students will collect paper, plastic, and cans while working towards earning an Earth Day Flag. Additionally, students will beautify the campus by planting flowers in the fall and in the spring.

Guitar Club
Learn how to play the guitar or jam with your friends! Guitar Club meets on Mondays and Fridays from 2:15-3:00.

Hawthorn Beautification Club
Open to students who show an interest in art for the purpose of making artwork for our school. Join in the fun of creating canvases, ceiling tiles, stool designs, and even painting a Vernon Hills Snow Plow.

Historical Miniature Society Club
Open to all students interested in recreating historical battles using miniature figures.

International Club
Students will travel around the world in their explorations of different cultures. International Club students will learn about the food, social customs, dances, and culture of many ethnic groups. In the spring, students will showcase what they’ve learned in an evening performance of dancing, food and fun. Friends and family will be invited to the extravaganza.

Math Team
This team appeals to the student who loves contests, enjoys “out of the ordinary” problems and can compute easily with and without a calculator. High-level reasoning skills are necessary.

Newspaper
Students will share news about comics, sports, movie/book reviews, “Dear Abbey,” and much more in writing for the Hawthorn Herald. Newspapers will be available online through the school district’s website and hard copies will be published several times during the year.

School Play
Actors, singers, and dancers should audition for the school play the last of week of February. The actual date of play will be determined soon. Daily rehearsals run through April.

Science Club
Any student interested in expanding his or her experiences in science is invited to join. Members are usually good at problem solving, working with science equipment, and experimenting. There may be possible participation in Science Olympiad (state/national competition) Accolades to our Science Teachers and Students! Our school won a grant to construct solar cells which are now producing free electricity for the school. Science students will soon be forming a Solar Club to monitor the solar cells and explore alternative means of energy.

Student Council
Students seeking to be active in planning Spirit Days, Dances, Fund raisers, and other school and community services should plan to get involved. Representatives are elected.

Scholastic Bowl Team
Students with a wide-range of interests who enjoy quick-witted dialogue and challenging opponents (Jeopardy Enthusiasts) should plan to attend. The enrollment is open. This team does compete against other schools in our athletic conference.

Sew What? Sewing and Crafts Club
Come join the fun and be creative in our new sewing and craft club! Students will complete various projects such as making scarves, blankets, necklaces, planters, and much more! Students will need to pay a fee for the purchase of materials.

Tech Club
Filmmaking! Digital photography! Podcasting! If any of these interest you, stop by Room 403 on Tuesdays. Twice during the year we will have a Tech Club Showcase, where parents and friends can come view the work you have done in Tech Club. We are also available this year to anyone wanting to use technology to create a class project. Stop by on Tuesdays, beginning in October, and we will help you come up with a great presentation for your class project. Anyone interested in being a "Tech Tutor" should contact Mr. Reid.

FALL SEASON
CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
The season starts at the beginning of the school year and ends with the IESA State Meet in October. There are no tryouts and the team is open to 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys and girls. Practices are every day from 2:15 – 3:40 except when there is a meet. Practices and home meets are held at Big/Little Bear Lake.

POM PON SQUAD
Tryouts are in mid-September and the season ends in mid-January. The squad performs at HOME boys’ basketball contests. The team is open to 7th and 8th grade girls. Practice is every day from 2:15 – 4:30.

Tryouts are in the beginning of October and the season ends in January. The squads perform at boys’ HOME basketball contests and MSN vs. MSS games. There are two squads. There will be a Spirit Competition on January 27 at MSS. Please see Ms. Roche for a practice schedule.

LATE WINTER SEASON
WRESTLING
Practice begins in early December and ends with the IESA State Tournament in March. There are several Saturday tournaments. All wrestlers compete in weight classes and all other safety measures are taken for this sport. Wrestling is open to any interested 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys.

TRACK AND FIELD – BOYS AND GIRLS
The season begins in the middle of March and finishes with the IESA State Tournament in Peoria in late May. This activity is open to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and they usually compete in their own division. Practice is every day from 2:15 to 4:15. All home meets are held at the Vernon Hills High School field. Because of the number of events involved with track and field, meets usually run into the early evening.
