SECTION 3 – QUIZ REVIEW (Answers Only)
1st Continental Congress A meeting in Philadelphia where 12 of the 13 colonies sent representatives to support the people of Massachusetts during the Intolerable Acts.
Militia
An army of citizens who serve as soldiers
Quebec Act
This act protected the rights of French Catholics and set up a government for Canada.
Minutemen
A group of volunteers that were ready to fight in a moments notice.
Boston Tea Party
Sam Adams led the Sons of Liberty to action against the British to protest taxation.
Intolerable Acts
A series of four laws that were to punish the people of Massachusetts for the Boston Tea Party
MAIN IDEAS:
1. American tea merchants were angry because they had been cut out of the tea trade and colonists objected to the tax.
2. Parliament passed 4 laws to punish the Massachusetts for their actions.
1. The port of Boston was closed.
2. Massachusetts' colonists could not hold town meetings more than once a year without the governor’s approval.
3. British officials were now tried in Britain or Canada instead of Massachusetts.
4. A new, stricter Quartering Act was passed, forcing the colonist to house the British soldiers.
3. No – Parliament’s solution did not stop the protests. It cause the colonists to join together
in continued opposition.
4. The Intolerable Acts cause the colonists to work together to support Boston and the people of Massachusetts by the following actions:
- Food supplies were sent to Boston
- Colonial Leaders established the first united effort by organizing the First Continental Congress.
- The members of the Congress decided to boycott British goods and to stop exporting colonial goods to England, until the Intolerable Acts were repealed.
5. a)
General Gage heard that the colonists were storing arms and he goal was to seize these weapons.
b)
- At Lexington, 700 British soldiers met 70 minutemen.
- The minutemen were asked to leave – but a shot was fired killing 8 colonists.
- British army did not find any weapons and headed back to Boston.
- At Concord, 300 colonists met the British and fighting broke out.
- The colonist used frontier style fighting, killed or wounded many British and sent the British retreating
